Southgate named a 28-man squad for England’s upcoming games against Italy and Germany.

The Three Lions face Italy away on Friday September 23, before hosting Germany on Monday September 26.

This is the last international break before Southgate picks his squad for the first winter World Cup in Qatar, which starts on November 20.

Despite being dropped by new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, Maguire retains his place in the England squad.

Red Devils defender Luke Shaw has also been picked but neither Jadon Sancho or Marcus Rashford are in the squad, with the latter currently struggling with an injury.

Partly due to Rashford absence, Southgate has decided to hand a maiden call-up to Brentford’s Toney, who has scored 17 Premier League goals and registered six assists in 39 appearances for the Bees since the start of last season.

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale.

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell, Conor Coady, Eric Dier, Marc Guehi, Reece James, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Fikayo Tomori, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker.

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, James Ward-Prowse.

Forwards: Tammy Abraham, Jarrod Bowen, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling, Ivan Toney.

England No. 1 Jordan Pickford also misses out through injury, leaving Aaron Ramsdale, Nick Pope and Dean Henderson as Southgate’s options in goal.

Maguire is joined in the squad by fellow defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell, Reece James and Kyle
