Gardener gives advice for healthy poinsettias this Christmas - and one thing you shouldn't do

Poinsettias have become a traditional Christmas plant, offered gifted to loved ones over the festive season due to their vibrant red flowers and lush green leaves.

But despite these festive houseplants being a popular gift during the holiday season, they're notorious for wilting or even dying shortly after Christmas, as many people don't know how to properly care for them.

But now experienced gardener Michael Griffiths has shared his top tips for keeping poinsettias alive and flourishing for years to come.

In an online video, Michael, who posts advice videos on TikTok, said: "Does your poinsettia always die really quickly? Well, this is how to keep it alive over Christmas and well into next year."

He explained that one of the main reasons poinsettias tend to perish or deteriorate quickly is due to exposure to extreme temperatures, which is common during this time of year with the cold outdoor weather contrasting with the warm heated rooms inside.

Michael stressed the importance of repotting your new poinsettia when you get it home and avoiding overwatering. He instructed: "Put them in a bright draught-free position and only water them when the top of the compost is starting to feel dry."

Poinsettias should be placed somewhere bright but not in direct sunlight, as this can harm the petals.

They thrive best in temperatures between 13C and 15C. It's crucial to keep them away from windows, doorways and fireplaces, as the temperature in these areas can fluctuate significantly throughout the day, potentially damaging the plant.
