Galway football legend Noel Tierney dies at 82

Galway football legend Noel Tierney has died at the age of 82.

The Milltown clubman won three All-Irelands in a row from 1964-66, starring from full-back in the famed Tribesmen team.

He was named the Texaco/Caltex Footballer of the Year in 1964 at the age of 22, the highest honour in the game in the pre All-Stars era.

The 2024 Footballer of the Year Paul Conroy was in Milltown just last week for a well-attended event to celebrate Tierney's life and career, at which the guest of honour - who had been ill in recent years - spoke.

His career was destined for greatness from a young age, winning a minor All-Ireland in 1960.

His other honours included five Connacht Championships and a National League title with Galway in 1965, plus two Railway Cups with Connacht, including as captain in 1969.

With Milltown he won a Galway SFC title in 1971, their first ever county championship win.
