Gall wins Tour stage 17, Vingegaard extends lead

Felix Gall pipped Simon Yates to victory on stage 17 of the Tour de France as Tadej Pogacar conceded defeat to Jonas Vingegaard in the fight for yellow.

Gall and Yates had been part of a 33-strong breakaway on the queen stage of the Tour, and it was the Austrian who proved stronger on the day as he broke clear on the final climb and hung on to take the win by just over 30 seconds in Courcheval.

Having shown cracks in Tuesday's time trial, Pogacar crumbled on the Col de la Loze, losing the wheels still with eight kilometres to the summit of this Tour's highest mountain as the time gaps ballooned before the finish.

"I'm gone," Pogacar told his team on the radio as he watched his rival ride away. "I'm dead."

There were no such problems for Vingegaard, who saw Pogacar fade away and then set off after the remnants of the breakaway himself with another major show of strength.

The defending champion could not quite catch Gall and Simon Yates but did finish fourth on the stage, crossing the line just after Pello Bilbao, less than two minutes behind Gall with Pogacar still some way down the mountain.

It was a second second-placed finish of the Tour for Simon Yates, who was narrowly beaten by his twin brother Adam on the opening stage in Bilbao.
