Gabby Logan: 'Euro 2022 & Commonwealth Games has put women's sport front and centre'

Turn on the TV this week, and Gabby Logan will most likely be on the screen.

The 49-year-old is now among the most highly-respected sports broadcasters in the country, and rightly so. She expertly guides viewers through the highs and lows of events such as the Olympic Games, the Six Nations, and the FIFA World Cup.

This summer, she has fronted the BBC’s coverage of Euro 2022, and is set to present the athletics at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

With one event reaching its conclusion this week and the other getting underway, Logan will be a regular feature on the BBC in the coming days.

“The final of Euro 2022 is on Sunday, and hopefully it will feature [England manager] Sarina Wiegman’s women,” Logan told GiveMeSport Women.

“It would be wonderful, wouldn’t it, for me to jump from that into the athletics at the Commonwealth Games.”

England must first overcome Olympic silver medallists Sweden at Bramall Lane this evening.

But regardless of the result, the Lionesses have still picked up thousands of new fans on their exhilarating journey to the semi-finals. In fact, with every match of Euro 2022 broadcast on the BBC, women’s football has been more accessible than ever this summer.

England’s dramatic quarter-final win against Spain scored a peak UK viewership of nine million viewers, for example, with 7.6 million watching on BBC One and a further 1.5 million via the iPlayer and BBC Sport digital platforms.

“All the matches I’ve been doing on the BBC are 8pm kickoff, you know, primetime,” Logan said. “We’ve had most of the matches I’ve done on BBC One.

“If not, they’ve been on BBC Two, still with good build up. Lots of chat, lots of really brilliant pundits working on it as well.”
