Funeral of Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh taking place in Kerry

The funeral of former RTÉ GAA commentator Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh is taking place at the church of Naomh Muire in Daingean Uí Chúis, Co Kerry.

Mr Ó Muircheartaigh died on Tuesday at the Mater Hospital in Dublin. He was 93.

The chief celebrant is Fr Michael Moynihan, parish priest of Daingean Uí Chúis. Bishop of Kerry Dr Ray Browne is also a celebrant.

Fr Jim Sheehy from Baile an t-Sagairt in Daingean Uí Chúis is another celebrant.

Tánaiste Mícheál Martin and GAA President Jarlath Burns were expected to attend the funeral mass.

Mr Ó Muircheartaigh will be buried afterwards at Baile an Mhuilleann.

He is survived by his wife, Helena, and their eight children.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin, Minister for Education Norma Foley, former GAA Director General Liam Mulvihill and GAA President Jarleth Burns are also attending the funeral mass.

Crowds gathered in west Kerry yesterday to pay their respects to the family of the former RTÉ broadcaster.

Mr Ó Muircheartaigh's body lay in repose at O'Connor's Funeral Home for members of the public to sympathise with his family from 11am to 8pm.

Among those who paid their respects was Taoiseach Simon Harris, who flew directly from the two-day summit of EU leaders in Brussels to Kerry Airport.

Former GAA president Larry McCarthy, former Kerry football manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice, out-going Kildare football manager Glenn Ryan, RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst and broadcaster Marty Morrissey were also among the crowds who sympathised with Mr Ó Muircheartaigh's family.
