Manchester United have almost reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Frenkie de Jong, whom Erik ten Hag feels he can convince too, according to reports.

De Jong is Manchester United’s main midfield target for the summer transfer window. They are losing Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard in midfield. Therefore, they need to find a quality reinforcement to provide balance alongside Fred and Scott McTominay.

After working together at Ajax, Ten Hag has been hoping for a reunion with De Jong. There has been some growing optimism about the chances of Manchester United tempting Barcelona into a sale.

And now, Diario Sport have been reporting that United are close to reaching an agreement with De Jong’s current club. They will likely have to fork out a figure in the region of €80million (£68.32m).

That may be meaningless, though, if De Jong does not want to join them. There have been doubts over his willingness to sign for a club who will not be competing in the Champions League next season.
