French Open: Coco Gauff reaches semi-finals to record best Grand Slam result

US tennis star Coco Gauff has booked her place in the semi-finals of the French Open after another straight-sets win.

The 18-year-old defeated compatriot Sloane Stephens 7-5, 6-2 to extend her impressive run of form at the tournament.

Gauff is yet to drop a single set at Roland-Garros and her quarter-final victory marks her best result at a Grand Slam.

Her dominant run has set her up to face Martina Trevisan in the next round, which will be Gauff’s first ever major semi-final.

The rising star enjoyed a strong start to her match against Stephens and needed just 90 minutes in total to oust her opponent. The two Americans had met just once prior to Tuesday’s match, during the 2021 US Open.

Stephens defeated Gauff in the second round, but went on to be knocked out herself in the next stage.

“I feel so happy,” Gauff said after her victory. “Last year was a tough loss for me but I believe that match made me stronger.

“Last time I played Sloane I lost. Today was different. I stayed mentally strong as she is the kind of player who can make shots others can’t do.”

Gauff has looked comfortable throughout this year’s French Open, recording some impressive results so far.

The 18-year-old has scored two bagels in the tournament, one against Canada’s Rebecca Marino and the other against Elise Martens of Belgium.

She took a 3-0 lead in the first set over Stephens and despite an inspired burst of creativity from her opponent, Gauff kept her composure and reclaimed momentum as the score reached 6-5 in her favour. She scored a backhand winner to clinch the set and went on to wrap up the second set in much more comfortable fashion.

As she only turned 18 two months ago, Gauff is officially unbeaten as an adult in Grand Slam tournaments.
