Freddy’s Heroes Charity Football Day at Chatham Town followed by promotion party at the Bauvill Stadium

Chatham Town are hosting a charity match this Sunday in memory of a young fan who died of a rare genetic disease.

Eight-year-old Freddy Leitch, from Gillingham, was born with chronic granulomatous disorder, leaving him prone to infections.

He attended home games when he could, including the win that clinched the Isthmian South East title, and he was visited in hospital by some of the players.

“They made his last days very special, and they made him smile,” said mum Kirsty.

A fundraising day will see proceeds go towards Demelza and the CGD Society – a charity supporting people and families affected by the condition.

Chats will play against a team of friends and family dressed as Freddy’s favourite superheroes, which includes professional boxer Dennis McCann. There will be a raffle, auction, best costume competition, live entertainment, football challenges, special guests and a balloon release.

Chatham player Jordy Robins said: “This means a lot to us because it’s a chance for us to give Freddy the send-off he deserves. He was such an incredible little lad who inspired us all and we want to make this a day to remember for his family who are going through a heartbreaking time.

“Freddy became a big part of our dressing room throughout the course of the season and when we heard the devastating news it broke us.

“It wasn’t just the home games Freddy attended. In fact, I vividly remember him supporting us away at VCD during a difficult moment of the season and we managed to turn it around and pick up the win. Rest in peace, Freddy.”

Gates open at 12.30pm. The match kicks off at 3pm and tickets cost £5 or £10 for a family (2+2) ticket.
