Freddie Ljungberg and the bizarre Celtic request that proved ominous Arsenal warning right
The Celtic kitman couldn't believe what he was hearing when Freddie Ljungberg rocked up at Parkhead – and asked for a pair of ULTRA waterproof flip flops.
That's according to Charlie Mulgrew who shared a hilarious tale about the Swedish icon's fleeting time in Glasgow. Ljungberg looked like a January coup for Neil Lennon in 2011 but he was ageing by that point and had spent the previous two years in MLS.
A one-time Arsenal Invincible, he arrived at Celtic hoping to reinvigorate his career but it didn't work out as imagined, Ljungberg leaving on a free in the summer after just seven appearances. He's a Scottish football trivia question these days but while he didn't make the mark he had intended on the pitch, he certainly left the kitman with a story or two to tell.
Mulgrew, in the midst of his second Celtic spell at the time, remembers an outlandish request they couldn't possibly have been ready for...even though the kitman was warned. "He was really high maintenance, Freddie Ljungberg," Mulgrew said on Clyde 1 SSB. "I spoke to the kitman (at Celtic) and the Arsenal kitman actually phoned him and said, 'You do not know what you’re getting yourself in for here? Freddie Ljungberg is so high maintenance'.
"Within a couple of days he asked for a couple of flip flops that don’t get wet… there you go. Obviously all flip flops are water-proof but he wanted ones that were ultra-waterproof.
"I don’t know, maybe sealed, with Vaseline over the top of them. That’s what he asked for. You should have seen the amount of stuff he had at his place (in the dressing room)."
