Frank McAvennie says Newcastle’s next captain ‘has got to be’ Trippier

Kieran Trippier is close to making his long-awaited return for Newcastle United following a foot fracture two months ago and will be welcomed back with open arms after his bright start to life at St James’ Park.

The 31-year-old scored two goals in four Premier League games upon his arrival from Atletico Madrid in January, but he hasn’t featured since February’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

McAvennie hailed Trippier’s impact at Newcastle and believes he’ll be given the captaincy next season, telling Football Insider: “It’s got to be Trippier. He has so much experience.

“He has experience of winning things at Atletico (Madrid) under (Diego) Simeone, you can’t buy that. That’s the standard of player Newcastle want, so it would make sense to make him captain.

Jamaal Lascelles is the Magpies’ skipper but has an uncertain future this summer after losing his place to new-boy Dan Burn, so Howe could give the armband to another player if Lascelles isn’t going to start next season.

McAvennie added: “He has a long-term future at the club, and there aren’t many Newcastle players who can say that at the moment. You just hope he can stay fit to play 30-odd games next season.

“He’s a brilliant player and I know the fans up there love him. (So) I think the captaincy has to go to him, there is no one else.” Eddie Howe has turned to Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth in Trippier’s absence with varying degrees of success, so 31-year-old should reclaim his place upon his return.
