Frank Lampard explains Duncan Ferguson role and Everton coaching staff changes

Frank Lampard emphasised the importance of having Duncan Ferguson on his Everton coaching staff at his first press conference since taking charge of the club.

Ferguson's second spell as Everton's temporary boss is now over after Lampard was confirmed as Rafa Benitez's permanent replacement.

His first spell in caretaker control saw the Blues legend get one over his new manager in December 2019.

Back then Everton ran out 3-1 winners at a super-charged Goodison Park against a Chelsea side managed by Lampard.

And the new Blues boss admitted he had this week joked about that game with Ferguson, who has now reverted back to his position as assistant manager.

Lampard said: "I'm delighted to work alongside Duncan. I've seen him from afar... well, actually close up a couple of years ago when Everton beat Chelsea! We had a good laugh about that in the last couple of days.

"He's a club legend. He's a person the players respect, the club respect, the fans respect, and I can only help myself from tapping into his experience and knowledge.

"I'm very open and accommodating and there's no way I would do anything that's not the best for this job. I've really enjoyed having Duncan around these past couple of days."

Before the press conference, the Blues confirmed that Lampard's former Chelsea and England team-mate Ashley Cole had joined the club as first-team coach.

Cole, who is assistant manager to former Everton midfielder Lee Carsley with England Under-21s, arrives from Chelsea's academy.

And he will work alongside assistant managers Ferguson and Joe Edwards, fellow first-team coach Paul Clement, first-team coach and head of performance Chris Jones, as well as goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly.
