Frank heading for first transfer disaster at Everton on £25m tank who's been "immense" - opinion

An update has emerged on Everton tank Ben Godfrey, regarding interest in his services from elsewhere…

According to The Mirror, Newcastle United are eyeing up a deal for the central defender ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Magpies were keen on a move in January and are now set to make another swoop for him at the end of the season.

Frank Lampard could be heading for his first transfer disaster in charge of the club as losing Godfrey would be a major blow in the summer.

The centre-back, who joined from Norwich for £25m in 2020, has been a fantastic signing and one of the few shining lights at Goodison Park over the last 18 months.

Famous Toffees fan Tony Bellew dubbed him as “immense” last season as he caught the eye at the back with a string of superb performances. In the Premier League last term, Godfrey averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.03 for the club, winning 66% of his individual duels and making 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game.

His performances have dropped off in the current campaign, in line with the rest of the team, as he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.77. However, he is still making 2.9 tackles and interceptions and has been forced to play at full-back to make up for the club’s lack of depth at right-back and left-back.

This shows that he has the versatility required to be a vital member of the squad. Lampard knows that he can do a job anywhere across the back four, whilst putting in impressive displays when he plays in his favoured position.

Therefore, losing him would be a disaster as they would have to replace his quality at centre-back along with his ability to play in multiple positions. It could force the club into needing to sign two players to take
