Fran Alonso reckons Celtic women's title would have been bagged with VAR as Scottish Cup final to make history

Fran Alonso reckons his Celtic side could have won the title if VAR had operated in their past two SWPL meetings with Rangers.

Caitlin Hayes had a goal chopped off in the last game between the sides at the start of this month, which Rangers won 1-0. And the Hoops boss also felt Celtic had a legitimate penalty claim dismissed in the 1-1 draw in March. VAR will be used at Hampden today for their Scottish Cup Final against Rangers – the first time it has been used in a women’s domestic game. Alonso is all for it and said: “I was 100 per cent on board

“We’ve been extremely unlucky in our last two games against Rangers. VAR would have made a difference – maybe we’d be going for the double? For me, VAR is important. It is a help to the referee. Referees, like coaches and players, make mistakes – we are human.

“The best leagues have got VAR. With time we will have it as well. It is a one-off for the final because of cost implications. Maybe in a few years it will be normal in many women’s games.”
