Fowler reveals stumbling block to Liverpool domination; wouldn’t mind if rivals cleaned up

Robbie Fowler feels Liverpool will probably fall short in their pursuit of four trophies as rivals Manchester City are just too good.

The Reds are still on the hunt for an historic quadruple, with the EFL Cup already tucked away in their locker. The Premier League title battle has long been a two-horse race between the Merseysiders and Citizens. City are just one point ahead of the rivals but the pair meet on April 10 at the Etihad in what could be a title decider.

The duo will also square off in the FA Cup semi-finals on April 16. They were kept apart in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Liverpool go up against Benfica while Pep Guardiola’s side face another Portuguese club in Sporting. They could play each other in the final of Europe’s elite club competition.

Fowler played for both clubs during a stellar career. He believes the current crop of Anfield stars are as good as anything there has been in the past.

But the former striker refused to rule City out of landing multiple trophies with the quality in their ranks.

“There’s a lot to play for and I am sure if you [ask] Manchester City, they will say exactly the same thing,” he told Sky Sports News. “They are tournaments that both clubs think they can win and they have got the players that are capable of winning many trophies.

“I think it is great being a Liverpool fan right now because we are seeing things that we probably haven’t seen in the past.

“I know the club have won things and it sounds a bit silly but I think what we’re seeing now is arguably one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever squads.”

City have been the dominant side in English football during the past decade. They have won five Premier League titles and could go back-to-back if they keep Liverpool at bay
