Forward Corie Andrews enjoys dream Dover Athletic debut, coming off substitutes bench to get winner in 3-2 National League South success at Weston-super-Mare; Braintree Town and Chesham United next up

Corie Andrews enjoyed a dream Dover Athletic debut.

The forward, who only joined boss Jake Leberl’s squad in the build-up to last weekend’s National League South match at Weston-super-Mare, came off the substitutes’ bench to get the all-important goal at the Woodspring Stadium in the 90th minute in a 3-2 win.

Andrews had been at Crabble in pre-season.

While both parties were unable to agree terms at the time, Leberl did eventually move for the 28-year-old after the squad suffered some early-season injury issues and he has already gone some way to repaying his new manager’s faith in him.

Leberl said: “How quickly did his week change?

“From not having a club to coming in and then scoring the winner! Corie was with us in pre-season, although we didn’t have the finances to take him.

“Then, we have had a few injuries so it’s strange how football works. Ruben [Soares-Junior] is out still, Sonny [Fish] is out, although I feel Rolando Onu did really well on Saturday.

“He was unlucky not to get a couple of goals for himself. It’s why I say what I say to the players that aren’t getting the minutes - they want to keep working hard and keep smiling.

“Their opportunities will come.”

Andrews, who enjoyed a brief loan spell at Margate in 2016, started his career with Crystal Palace and has played for the likes of Maidenhead and Oxford City in recent years.

“He offers something a little bit different,” said Leberl.

“He has played in the league before. He hasn’t got a great scoring record but, with the way we do things, hopefully, he will get opportunities.

“Hopefully, he can stick about and we’ll see how everything unfolds.”
