Formula E: Vandoorne eyeing 'beautiful' end to Mercedes' stint in championship

Stoffel Vandoorne says it would be a ‘beautiful’ end to Mercedes’ current spell in Formula E if they could seal both the Drivers’ and Teams’ championship this weekend in South Korea.

The inaugural Seoul E-Prix hosts the conclusion of season 8 this weekend, with a race to be held on both Saturday and Sunday.

It’s high-stakes stuff for Stoffel Vandoorne, too, with him bidding to seal the Drivers’ title after building a 36-point lead in the standings in recent weeks.

Mercedes EQ, meanwhile, can win the Teams’ championship for the second year running, having done so last season, whilst Vandoorne winning would also mean a second-straight Drivers’ crown after his team-mate won it last year.

Speaking to the press, including GMS, at a virtual press call, Vandoorne reflected on that and what it would mean with Mercedes bowing out of the sport at the conclusion of this campaign:

“It would be great to pull it off for two years in a row. Nyck [de Vries] won the championship last year and we won the teams’ [championship] and currently we’re leading both championships as well so hopefully we can finish it off in style in Seoul.

“Also, because it’s the last race for Mercedes it would be a beautiful end to that story as well. I said at the start of the year I want to give them a good leaving party so hopefully we’ll be able to do that.”

It’s all to play for this weekend, and we’re set up for a thrilling end to what’s been another captivating year of Formula E racing.

Season 8 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship reaches its conclusion in Seoul, South Korea with a double-header on August 13 and 14, with both races live on terrestrial television on Channel 4 from 07:30 BST.
