Formula 1: Williams open to signing Mick Schumacher

Williams team boss Jost Capito has given his thoughts on Mick Schumacher being an option for the team for their vacant 2023 seat.

The driver market has certainly provided plenty of headlines in recent weeks with the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Oscar Piastri and Daniel Ricciardo all playing their part in the merry-go-round.

There are still chapters to be written before the 2023 line-up is complete, though, with us waiting to see if Pierre Gasly is going to move to Alpine – it is expected that he will – and who will replace him at AlphaTauri, with Nyck de Vries tipped as a potential successor.

Haas still need to decide who they want to partner Kevin Magnussen for next year, meanwhile, with Mick Schumacher and Nico Hulkenberg the two that are in the frame, whilst Williams need to find their replacement for Nicholas Latifi.

Williams have been linked with De Vries and with promoting Logan Sargeant for 2023 but Schumacher could also be an option if he leaves Haas, and Capito has confirmed that the team would be open to such a switch:

“Mick deserves to stay in Formula 1,” Capito said speaking to RTL.

“We’ll see if that happens, but he’s definitely an option for us. [He could] really move forward and be a very good driver in Formula 1. He’s now in his second year, if you look at George Russell, he also made mistakes with Williams in the second year and he nevertheless developed.

“Formula 1 is very complex and the step from Formula 2 is so big because the cars are so complex and technically more demanding. You have to learn that, you have to give a driver two years to get there and show what he can do in the third year.”

Other reports in Germany have suggested that Mick has begun contract talks with Haas for 2023
