Formula 1: What is ground effect? Sky's Ted Kravitz explains armed with a Dyson

Ground effect is something that we’re going to hear mentioned a great deal more of this season in Formula 1, as the aerodynamic changes to the sport allow for it to return.

First introduced to the sport in the late 70s, ground effect used fast-flowing air underneath the car to produce greater downforce and to allow for faster driving, but it did not last in F1for long.

Indeed, it was banned only a matter of years later for being deemed too unsafe, as cars in the 80s piled on the horsepower.

Now, though, with the cars at their very safest, ground effect is coming back with a bang as part of the new aerodynamic regulations that the sport is introducing for the 2022 season and beyond.

It can, though, be a little difficult to get your head around so instead of letting us try to explain it, why not let Ted Kravitz of Sky Sports do the honours, with the help of a Dyson vacuum cleaner and a model of a Nico Rosberg Mercedes:
