Former Sunderland goalkeeper Lee Burge signs for League Two side Northampton Town

Former Sunderland shot-stopper Lee Burge has signed a two-year deal with Northampton Town following his release from the Stadium of Light. The 29-year-old will link up with the League Two promotion hopefuls when his contract expires on July 1 having spent the last three years on Wearside.

During that time Burge played 66 times for the Black Cats and was named the goalkeeper in the EFL 2020/21 League One Team of the Season. He also helped Lee Johnson's side end their Wembley hoodoo as they defeated Tranmere Rovers in the Papa John's Trophy final back in the 2020/21 campaign.

Town have just recently lost goalkeeper Liam Roberts to Middlesbrough and Burge has now been brought to the club as his replacement.

Speaking after confirming his signing, Cobblers boss Jon Brady said: “Lee is a quality addition and we are delighted to be able to bring him to the club. He is a really good age for a keeper and has a first class pedigree, he has played a lot of football in the Championship and League 1 and we feel he will be an excellent addition.

“There was a lot of interest in his services, as you would expect for a keeper of his experience and quality, and we are delighted we have been able to fend off that interest. He has the qualities we were looking for and we are excited to be working with him.

“To be able to bring the League One Team of the Season keeper from 2021 to Sixfields is an excellent piece of business and a real coup for the club and his arrival is another key target in place."
