Former star 'devastated' at not being invited to play in Manchester United Legends vs Celtic

A former Celtic star has expressed his annoyance at being overlooked for the club's Legends match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, directing a hint of sarcasm toward some of those who did make the cut.

A team of Hoops legends managed to edge past United on penalties after a Gary Hooper goal that levelled after Wayne Rooney's opener. Five cool spot kicks crowned the Scots as the winners of the day.

However, some feel the label 'legend' is sometimes used liberally. While the likes of Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes obviously fit into that category, names such as Danny Webber, Phil Bardsley and Danny Pugh only made a handful of first-team appearances before being moved on.

As for Celtic, while Efe Ambrose, Kelvin Wilson, and Barry Robson were decent players for the Hoops, the term 'legend' might be considered a stretch by fans when referring to them.

In contrast stands Alan Thompson, a midfielder who certainly carved his name into the hearts of the Celtic faithful, being part of the team's success under Martin O'Neill and Gordon Strachan in the early 2000s and scoring an impressive 51 goals over 227 appearances.

The 50-year-old did not mince words when commenting on his absence from the star-studded game, making his feelings known on Sunday night through social media.

Thompson remarked on his X account: "Devastated when you don't get invited to Celtic legends game vs Man Utd at Old Trafford but hey ho, life goes on. Must have some serial winners to pick from!!!"
