Former school in Chorlton's conservation area set to be demolished to make way for new homes

A former Chorlton school is set to be demolished to make way for 22 homes. Cube Homes has lodged plans for the development on land at the former Islamic High School for Girls in High Lane.

The school relocated to a site in Didsbury earlier this month saying they had ‘outgrown the site’, leaving the buildings vacant. The proposals include the demolition of most of the existing building and the construction of 22 homes with a mix of town houses and apartments.

The existing mansion house at the site will be converted into two homes. The site is within the Wilbraham Road and Edge Lane Conservation Area.

A design and access statement published by Manchester City Council, said: “The site itself is sustainably positioned to the south of Chorlton village. “It comprises the Islamic Girls High School main buildings which are arranged in an L shape, the original Carlton House and its early 20th century east extension located behind the school car park fronting High Lane.

“The hardstanding playground occupies the remainder of the site and is bound by a high brick wall which diminishes in height northwards along Acres Road.” In pre-application meetings with the developer the council expressed concerns about the potential demolition of Carlton House due to its architectural importance in the conservation area so the plans now retain it.
