Former Rangers striker Oleg Salenko lets rip over Russian 'propaganda' as he opens up on life in Kyiv

Former Rangers striker Oleg Salenko has hit out at the Russian government as he vows not to leave besieged Kyiv.

The ex Ibrox man was born in Saint Petersburg - now Leningrad - to a Ukrainian father and a Russian mother, and has settled in Ukraine following the end of his playing career.

Salenko made 16 league appearances for Walter Smith 's side, scoring seven times, but his career was cut short by injury.

He set a World Cup record by five goals in one game for Russia against Cameroon at USA '94 but has been left sickened by the incursion of Vladimir Putin's troops into the country he now calls home.

And he's lashed out at his birth nation as his city prepares for the expected Russian invasion into the city.

He said: "Everything is fine with me. Yes, we are suffering but our people help us.

"I've been in Kyiv since the start of the war and I won't be leaving. I am here with my son.

"I am a Soviet Union man, but there is nothing left of the old Soviet. They need to end this mess now. The Russians are coming into my city soon.

"I speak to people in my home city of St Petersburg and they have no idea what's actually going on.

"They think everything is okay in Kyiv. I spoke to my ex-wife and she seems to think we are living normally!

"I told her our children are being killed everywhere, but she had no idea because of the propaganda that is being fed to them there.

"They think this war is normal."
