Former Manchester United youngster cherishes Sir Alex Ferguson's 'special' decision in title win

Former Manchester United youngster Scott Wootton has described playing in a title-winning side under Sir Alex Ferguson as "quite special."

The 30-year-old, who currently plies his trade in New Zealand with Wellington Pheonix, made four appearances for United in their successful 2012/13 Premier League campaign. Ferguson called time on his tenure at the helm that season as he helped knock Liverpool off their perch with United's 20th league title.

Since departing the Theatre of Dreams, Wootton has had spells at Leeds United, MK Dons, Plymouth Argyle and Morecambe before moving to the A-League. But for the Birkenhead-born defender, the opportunity to be entrusted by the trophy-laden tactician still holds as much sentimentality now as it did in 2012.

"Cherish is probably the right word really, because it meant a lot, obviously at the time, being picked by Alex Ferguson to start three games and play one more," he told Stuff. "Four appearances obviously isn't a huge number, but to be trusted and to be selected by such an unbelievable manager was very special.

"There's a lot of players who have probably gone on to have maybe better careers than me who never got the chance to play for Man United and I think when you finish and when you get older, to look back and say that you played for Man United under Sir Alex Ferguson – in a league-winning season as well – will be quite special."
