Former Manchester United teammate urges Erik ten Hag to extend Jonny Evans deal

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has urged Erik ten Hag to give Jonny Evans a one-year deal to help both player and club.

Many supporters were surprised when United announced Evans had signed a short-term contract with the Reds to allow him to feature in their tour of the US. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the 35-year-old played against Wrexham as a mainly youthful side lost 3-1 to the National League champions.

Despite being unable to inspire a victory for the Reds' youngsters Yorke, who monitored Evans' progress when he was coming up the youth team ranks at United and played alongside him at Sunderland, believes the central defender still has the ability to play an important role for Ten Hag should he be given a new deal.

Speaking to MEN Sport, he said: "I've always rated Jonny, even as a kid when he was coming through at Man United, he was a bit of a surprise and he was far better than what people gave him credit for. Evans is a quality player, one that is a very competent defender and comfortable on the ball, so you could rely on him.

"You could see how Leicester City collapsed when he was out of the team, especially without his guidance and reading of the game. I think a one-year deal at Man United would be good because when you re-sign for the club you love, you get energised again and get that glimmer of hope that could reignite his career. I think Erik ten Hag could give him that reserve role behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, he can be the next guy in line."
