Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal confirms cancer treatment has been a success

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that the treatment he has undergone for an aggressive form of prostate cancer has been successful.

Last week, Van Gaal, who is currently in his third spell as the Netherlands manager, revealed on Dutch TV that he was battling the disease. He made the surprise announcement during an appearance on 'Humberto', on which he was appearing to talk about his new film - 'LOUIS' - in which his cancer is addressed.

He admitted that the form of cancer was an aggressive one, that he'd had it for a prolonged period and had already undergone treatment on 25 occasions. Now, though, he has admitted that the 25 bouts of treatment have been a success.

"I've been through everything," Van Gaal told Dutch news agency ANP. "I had 25 radiation treatments.

"Then I had to wait five or six months to see if it had done its job. It did."

Nevertheless, Van Gaal is going to stand down as Netherlands manager at the end of this year following the World Cup in Qatar. He is to be replaced in the role by Ronald Koeman, who was in charge of the Dutch national team up until August 2020 before taking over at Barcelona.

On returning to the role as Netherlands boss, Koeman, speaking last week, said: "I am looking forward to the new collaboration. A little over a year and a half ago, I certainly did not leave the Dutch national team out of dissatisfaction.

"My stay felt good, the results were good and the click with the internationals was good. We will soon continue on that path. That is certain for me."
