Former Liverpool FC star aims subtle dig at Erling Haaland ahead of Man City move

Former Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson has aimed a subtle dig at Erling Haaland ahead of his transfer to Manchester City.

Last week, the Blues announced they had reached an agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund for the transfer of Haaland. City did emphasise that a deal could not officially be confirmed yet as it was subject to Haaland agreeing personal terms with the club.

Should he complete his move to the Etihad Stadium, Haaland will likely be one of the league's highest earners. Liverpool were fleetingly mentioned as a possible destination for Haaland, and when asked about the draws of both City and Liverpool, former Reds defender Johnson claimed there was only one reason a player would choose the Blues over the Merseyside team.

Speaking on behalf of 888sport, Johnson said: "Financially to Man City, everyone is the underdogs and that’s unfortunate but clubs looking to sell their players will always want the most money. That narrows it down, doesn’t it?

"So, Liverpool probably are second to City in their financial power. For the players, if they go to City, they know they’re going to be competing strongly in every competition.

"But if it was fanbase, it would be Liverpool all day long. Unfortunately, money talks."

City and Liverpool will battle it out on the final day of the Premier League season to be crowned champions. Pep Guardiola's men know that a victory over Aston Villa on Sunday will secure the title, but anything less would open the door for the Reds.
