Former Liverpool FC ace Jamie Carragher makes Manchester United vs Newcastle score prediction

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has tipped Manchester United to bounce back from Sunday's derby defeat to Manchester City against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup this evening.

After comfortably dispatching of Crystal Palace in the last round, United welcome Newcastle to Old Trafford this evening with the ambition of progressing to the quarter-finals for the second season running. The Reds, of course, won the competition last season, beating Newcastle 2-0 in the final at Wembley.

United, however, have failed to use that Wembley triumph as a springboard, with performance levels and results having nosedived since. The weekend's 3-0 defeat by City featured another concerning showing from Erik ten Hag's side, meaning they are under stern pressure to get back on track.

Though the United manager treated the Carabao Cup with the utmost respect last season, regularly deploying a star-studded XI en route to lifting the trophy in February, he made a cluster of changes against Palace in round three in September, meaning he could do the same this evening. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has already hinted that he will make alterations to his team.

With that said, Carragher believes United's superior strength in depth could see them creep over the line and book a spot in the last-eight, backing them to win 1-0.

Carragher, penning his prediction for the EFL's official website, said: "I'm going to go for Manchester United. I know United have got a lot of injuries at the moment, but I think if they can get a few back for that, they've still got a deeper squad than Newcastle.
