Former Erik ten Hag striker outlines formula new Manchester United manager needs for success

A former striker who once played under Erik ten Hag has outlined what he needs to repeat at Manchester United in order to succeed.

The Dutch coach got off to an ideal start with a debut 4-0 pre-season friendly win over Liverpool in Bangkok on Tuesday. Fans were impressed with the tactics he deployed after only three weeks with his new squad.

Ten Hag is known for his title triumphs with Ajax, where he won three Eredivisie crowns in a row. He was head coach at Utrecht and Bayern Munich’s second team prior to this but started his managerial career at second-tier side Go Ahead Eagles in 2012.

He got the club promoted in his first year before Bayern snapped him up. During his debut season, he managed forward Marnix Kolder, who has since retired.

The 41-year-old has spoken about Ten Hag to Voetbal International and explained how he has always been on an upwards trajectory. He said his former boss must once again ensure the right people surround him at United if he wants to see the fruits of his labour.

“With every step he has taken, he is another guarantee of success.” he said. “Soon also at Manchester United. It’s a big club, but I have every confidence that he will succeed there too.

“He is so obsessed with football and leaves nothing to chance. If he gets the right people around him who he can work well with, United have made a good move in hiring him.”
