Former Celtic star claims Wrexham is a GLOBAL club just like the Hoops

Wrexham can be as BIG as they want as one star made comparisons with Celtic.

It was a weekend to remember for the Red Dragons as they secured back-to-back promotions to take their place in England's third tier for next season. They booked a spot back in the Football League season in dramatic fashion in a stunning title fight with Notts County and after hammering Forest Green 6-0 at the weekend, the Welsh side secured automatic promotion to English League One - with a couple of games to spare.

Ever since the arrival of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney things both on the park and off the park have been going strength to strength. There is a huge interest surrounding Wrexham with 'Welcome to Wrexham' on Disney + pulling in the viewers the likes of 'Sunderland 'Til I Die' enjoyed.

Scottish football fans will be familiar with one big name player in the ranks in the shape of Steven Fletcher. He was snapped up after leaving Dundee United but a former Celtic defender has established himself as a key man in the heart of the defence. Eoghan O’Connell has opened up on the exact moment he knew Wrexham were a GLOBAL club and looks back at one fixture in particular that reminded him of a Celtic away day.

He told The Athletic: “This club can become as big as it wants. Wrexham are global. That hit us all in the summer, when we were in North Carolina playing Chelsea (in a pre-season friendly).

"I remember being in the tunnel before the warm-up. They went out and there was a little roar. We then went out and the place really lifted. That’s why I say it is a global club.

"I also think back to Halifax away last year and the numbers we took [4,500 fans made the trip]. We got beat but I remember thinking in the warm-up it was similar
