Former Celtic and Motherwell coach dies aged 86

Former Celtic and Motherwell coach Frank Connor has died, aged 86.

The goalkeeper, who also played for the Hoops and had a spell as player/coach at Albion Rovers, passed away at a care home in Uddingston this morning after a short illness.

Best-known for being assistant to Davie Hay at Celtic between 1983-1986, Connor also assisted Jock Wallace when he was in charge of the Steelmen in 1982-83.

He started his career at Parkhead before spells at St Mirren, Derry City, Albion Rovers and Cowdenbeath, where he took on his first managerial job in 1974.

He went on to manage their Fife neighbours Raith Rovers in 1986-1990 and assisted Joe Jordan at Hearts between 1990-1993.

His final coaching job in the game came as Celtic caretaker in 1993 where he took over for four games after Liam Brady's exit.

A statement on Raith Rovers' website confirmed the news today. It read: "Raith Rovers FC were saddened to learn of the passing at 0930 this morning of former Rovers manager Frank Connor, after being contacted by his eldest son Tom today.

"Frank celebrated his 86th birthday last month, and was residing in Croftbank House Nursing Home, Uddingston.

"After a short illness, Frank deteriorated overnight and passed away this morning.

"He is survived by his loving wife Margaret, 7 children, several grandchildren and a great grandson."
