Former Ajax captain Joel Veltman gives verdict on Erik ten Hag's chances of succeeding at Manchester United

A former Ajax captain has backed Erik ten Hag to do “alright” at Manchester United given his “really good” tactical abilities.

The club were thumped 4-0 by Brighton on Saturday and a number of fans turned on the majority of the players. Cristiano Ronaldo was seen shaking his head in disbelief at the defensive capitulation and left the AMEX Stadium separately from his teammates.

United supporters are calling for an overhaul of the squad this summer, with a number already set to leave upon the expiration of their contracts. One of ten Hag’s primary tasks will be to galvanise the playing staff as well as making them tactically astute once again.

Joel Veltman witnessed United’s disunity first hand, playing the full 90 minutes for Brighton on Saturday. He was made skipper at former club Ajax by ten Hag prior to his switch to England.

He said it won’t be an easy ride for his former boss at Old Trafford, but he expects him to succeed. Veltman also underlined how Ten Hag is the type of manager United require at this present moment in time.

“It’s (United job) going to be a challenge for him, but that’s what he loves,” the defender told talkSPORT. "Ajax is big in the world of football but Manchester United is the next level – because of the media, fans and all the things around the club.

"But I think he will do alright. They need a gaffer who is tactically really good. So I think he will do a great job there.”
