Forget penalty call: BBC man claims Michael Oliver made another huge Everton error

Jermaine Jenas blasted Michael Oliver on Match of the Day 2 for his big call during Everton’s defeat this weekend.

Everton were in dreamland at Goodison Park as they raced into an early lead against Brentford knowing that a win would have mathematically secured their Premier League safety for another season – something that would have seemed miles off a few weeks ago.

However, the Toffees were likely leaving Goodison Park angered and worried as they ended up losing 3-2 and finished the game with just nine men on the pitch, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Salomon Rondon given their marching orders.

Jenas, though, slammed referee Oliver’s decision to not send off Mads Bech Sorensen after his foul on Richarlison in the penalty area prior to the Brazilian’s penalty.

He said: “At the end of the first half, even with 10 men, they came strong again, Everton, they get their penalty, and Bech’s already on a yellow card. I personally think this is a second yellow.

“If this is anywhere else on the pitch, I think he’s getting a yellow card for that, so it should have been evened up, it wasn’t, and it eventually cost Everton.”

This isn’t the only incident that came from proceedings at Goodison Park as there was also a huge penalty shout for a shirt pull on Richarlison.

There is a very strong argument to be had that Bech should have received a second yellow card as it is a pretty blatant foul and clearly impedes Richarlison as he advances on goal.

It may well have not just been this incident that cost Everton, but the fact that players such as Richarlison and Anthony Gordon switched off in key moments while defending crosses into their own box which saw them concede twice.
