Foreign Office issues travel warning to holidaymakers heading to Mexico

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a travel warning to holidaymakers heading to Mexico as Hurrican Otis makes landfall.

It comes as the hurricane slammed into Mexico’s southern Pacific coast as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane early on Wednesday - bringing 165mph (270kmh) winds and heavy rain.

Otis has now weakened to a Category 4 storm but the FCDO issued a warning to anyone travelling to the country on Wednesday.

An update on the travel advice page for Mexico said: "Hurricane Otis hit the Pacific south coast of Mexico as a category 5 hurricane overnight on 24 October with continued major hurricane conditions expected on 25 October.

"Major Hurricane warnings are in effect along the south coast, between San Jose del Progreso and San Jeronimo de Juarez. Life-threatening hurricane force winds are expected and there is potential for catastrophic damage. There is a severe and life-threatening risk of flooding from rain and coastal storm surges.

"Local Authorities have called for those in the affected zone to stay inside and take precautions, including staying informed about shelter locations. You should follow the advice of local authorities. For more information, see Hurricanes.

The hurricane is expected to continue to weaken quickly in Guerrero state’s steep mountains, but the 5in (127mm) to 10in (254mm) of rain forecast, with as much as 15in (381mm) possible in some areas, raised the threat of landslides and floods.
