Footballer Marcel Barrington travels to Ashford United’s Green Box Stadium instead of Ashford Town’s Robert Parker Stadium for FA Cup match between Kingstonian and Leatherhead

A footballer found himself 84 miles from where he was supposed to be on Saturday after making an unfortunate mix-up.

Leatherhead forward Marcel Barrington was due to head to Ashford Town (Middlesex) for his side’s FA Cup second qualifying-round tie against Kingstonian.

Only one problem – he ended up at Ashford United’s Homelands Stadium in Kent instead.

Leatherhead later revealed Barrington had arrived at the wrong Ashford, leaving the club’s media team struggling to resist the obvious jokes.

“Turns out Marcel [Barrington] arrived 84 miles away to Ashford, Kent!” Leatherhead FC posted on X.

Thankfully for Barrington, he did eventually make it to the correct ground and was able to come off the bench late in the second half.

The club’s match reporter wrote: “Before this game even kicked off, there was already a mild sense of surrealism about it, along with a faint whiff of the potential for chaos.

“For a start, it featured two Surrey teams being dragged out to play in Middlesex, a county which, administratively speaking, no longer even exists.

“Then we had the news that one of our players had in fact travelled to Ashford in Kent (to spare any blushes, I’ll keep his name a secret – let’s call him Barcel Marrington).”

Kingstonian are ground-sharing at Ashford Town and hosted Leatherhead in an FA Cup second qualifying round tie.

There was one person well placed to understand how the mistake might have happened.

Former Sheppey United player-manager Jack Midson commented: “He isn’t the first one to make that mistake and won’t be the last I’m sure…”

Kennington were in action at Ashford United's Homelands Stadium on Saturday, beating Glebe 2-1 in the Southern Counties East Premier Division.
