Chatham Town enjoy a sellout and a cup win over Gillingham as the Isthmian Premier side raise money for local charity the Wisdom Hospice
It was a night that meant far more to Chatham Town boss Kevin Hake than just a cup win.
Chatham’s chairman and first-team manager Hake hailed an “incredible” occasion after his side beat Gillingham 3-0 in front of a packed Bauvill Stadium.
Kola Salami, Jack Lyons and Tolu Ladapo were on target as Chatham saw off a young Gills side in the Kent Senior Cup second-round tie on Tuesday night.
It was free entry for fans, with a collection held for the Wisdom Hospice, a charity which has a personal connection to Hake. The match raised £2,847 for the charity.
On the sellout, Hake said: “It's great. It's something we experimented with last year [against Bromley in the same competition] and I've got to say a full thanks to [Gillingham chairman] Brad [Galinson] and the Gills for agreeing to do it and also the Kent FA as well.
“Hopefully we've raised some good money for an unbelievable charity. They do such a fantastic job and I speak from the heart to say I'll be forever grateful to them for the care my father received when he was there.
“It's just nice to be able to do a little bit and just make a difference. I think we're duly obliged as a community club to do what we can within our own community and hopefully we've raised a few quid for a nice charity. It gives you a bit of a warm feeling.”
Hake’s men performed well against a young Gillingham team to win the second-round tie.
“Gillingham are always going to send a good team down here,” he said.
“It was a more than competitive fixture and I think everyone gave a good account of themselves - including them - and just a few moments of brilliance really from our guys that was the tipping point really.
