Football finance expert makes Derby County claim after agreement with Middlesbrough

Speaking on the Price of Football podcast, Maguire broke down the details of the announcement of the agreement. 

Maguire claims this was the right step for the clubs to take as it will help move things along more quickly.

He also goes on to claim that both clubs were looking to avoid a legal dispute, as that would’ve been quite costly on top of the time it would’ve taken to clear up the issue.

“It is an accord, which is not a word we often see in the world of football. The exact terms and conditions are being kept quiet,” said Maguire, via the Derby Telegraph. 

“We’ve suggested they’ve tried to get things sorted out as quickly as possible and remember when Nick De Marco, the leading sports QC in the country came on the show, he always says he advises his clients that negotiation is better than litigation; A, it’s a lot quicker and B, it’s cheaper.

“And I suspect that when the respective legal teams showed Steve Gibson and Mel Morris the potential legal costs of settling this in the high court, they might have thought and come to an agreement where both parties can claim victory and I think that’s very important.”

This agreement should help Derby in their pursuit to find a new owner as quickly as possible. 

There are three parties all said to be interested in the purchase of the club but administrators Quantuma have not progressed with their offers due to the club’s financial disputes with Middlesbrough and Wycombe Wanderers.

However, the club is facing a deadline to provide proof of funds that it can afford to finish the season or else the club faces the threat of liquidation. 

Derby received a 21-points deduction penalty for going into administration last September.
