Footage shows chilling moment driver dumped Mercedes and ran away after ploughing into 'loving' mum and leaving her to die

CCTV footage has revealed the chilling moment a driver dumped his Mercedes and ran away after hitting a 'loving' mum and leaving her to die at the side of the road days before Christmas.

60-year-old Anne Jones was killed after John Brazil drove at twice the speed limit. She was crossing the road on her way to a meal with her husband when she was mowed down at 60mph on Edenfield Road in Rochdale.

But instead of stopping, coward John Brazil, 28, who was banned from driving at the time, sped away and fled the scene, leaving Mrs Jones gravely injured at the roadside on December 19 2021.

Brazil later attempted to hide his car in a residential car park on Raven Street, around 700 metres away from the scene of the horror crash.

CCTV footage now released by Greater Manchester Police shows the moments before the collision, as Anne crossed the road. Subsequent clips then show the Mercedes being driven away before Brazil can be seen parking up and running away on foot.

Brazil was banned from driving at the time, because he had failed to complete a re-test following a conviction for dangerous driving.

At court Harriet Tighe, prosecuting, told of how Brazil got behind the wheel of a Mercedes belonging to a friend who he was staying with. He later returned 'crying' and looking 'scared', telling them: "I've hit somebody, I've hit somebody."

Anne and her husband had booked a table at an Indian restaurant, which they were attending with another couple. She died almost instantly after suffering horrendous injuries.
