Floyd Mayweather, 19, brutally pummelling opponent through the ropes

Floyd Mayweather is undoubtedly one of the greatest technical boxers of all time and a video from his early days proves that he also had a nasty streak.

Fight fans usually think of the American as being quite boring to watch but you don’t get to 50-0 by being just a one-trick pony.

And he thrilled fans when he was just 19-years-old as he demolished journeyman Jerry Cooper in just his third professional fight.

Fighting in the 1997 super-featherweight division, he landed a left jab dropping Cooper after just 25 seconds.

He then threw a barrage of punches, putting his opponent through the ropes and onto the ring apron.

The fight was then stopped with referee Mitch Halpern deciding that the man then known as ‘Pretty Boy’ was far too good for Cooper.

He protested the stoppage but Halpern said he didn’t receive a response when asking if the beaten man was able to continue.

Mayweather earned just $7500 for the fight which is an extremely low amount compared to the $100 million that he achieved against Conor McGregor in his final outing.

The now 44-year-old looked like he was destined to win Olympic gold in the 1996 games in Atlanta but he had suffered a controversial defeat to Bulgarian Serafim Todorov in the semi-final.

Incredibly, he is the last man to beat Mayweather but the American still picked up Olympic bronze and the defeat may be the reason why he was so unbeatable in his pro career.

Later in his career, ‘Money’ had much more methodical victories which perhaps didn’t make him get the respect he deserves.
