Five Huddersfield Town players who could follow in Jon Russell's footsteps next season

Huddersfield Town’s B team has helped Sorba Thomas and Jon Russell turn into first-team stars, and there are a few other players in the system who will be hoping they get the chance to follow in their footsteps in the upcoming season.

Here’s a look at one player for each outfield position who could yet force their way into Carlos Corberan’s thoughts over the course of the season ahead, particularly if they are given a chance to catch the head coach’s eye in pre-season.

Some of these players spent at least part of last season out on loan, and all of them will likely be familiar names to you already, but they will all go into the summer friendlies looking to prove they deserve a more extensive look-in.

The player on this list with the most first-team experience for Town after making his breakthrough under the Cowleys before making 24 league appearances in 2020/21, Edmonds-Green spent last season away from Town as he helped Rotherham United to automatic promotion back into the Championship.

The 23-year-old defender received rave reviews for his efforts at the New York Stadium and could bring some welcome pace to a back line that is very aerially gifted but perhaps lacking in a bit more of a youthful touch after Levi Colwill’s return to Chelsea.

Being right-footed may count against Edmonds-Green as he would likely have to get in ahead of at least one of Tom Lees or Matty Pearson even to start in a back three, but REG is a talented defender whose career is surely just taking off.

You’ll have heard plenty about the 18-year-old right-back recent after his academy player of the year award and his first cap for Northern Ireland, but having seen him at close quarters a few times we believe the hype may be justified.
