Five fire engines scrambled to scene after blaze breaks out at garage

Five fire engines were sent to tackle a blaze at a a garage in Oldham last night.

The fire was first reported to the emergency services at around 11.45pm. It broke on Beever Street, near to the town centre.

The fire service said the blaze broke out at a 'commercial premises' - which the Manchester Evening News understands was a garage. Five fire engines from across the region were sent to the scene.

Firefighters gained entry into the building to extinguish the fire. They stopped it from spreading any further, the fire service added.

It has not been confirmed whether anyone was injured. Pictures taken on Beever Street last night showed a large fire service response at the scene.

A section of the street was cordoned off as crews tackled the blaze. It was reopened after the scene was made safe.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around quarter to midnight yesterday (Tuesday 28 June) we received a report of a fire at a commercial premises on Beever Street, Oldham.

"Five fire engines from Oldham, Chadderton, Heywood, Stalybridge and Mossley fire stations were quickly at the scene, where they found a fire involving a single-storey garage. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus gained access to the building and used four hose reels and cooling jets to extinguish the fire and prevent any spread.

"Crews were at the scene for around three hours.”
