First potential summer signing: Alasdair Gold now claims 29-year-old 'likely' to join Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are ‘likely’ to make the summer signing of Sam Johnstone who is set to become a free agent in the coming months. 

This is according to Spurs journalist Alasdair Gold who was talking transfers on his YouTube channel after the Lilywhites’ draw on Saturday.

The North London club have been linked with the West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper in the past few months with the 29-year-old looking set to leave in the summer.

Johnstone has 36 appearances in the Championship this season for the Baggies and has caught the attention of a number of clubs with Manchester United also said to be interested in the shot-stopper.

Amid reports suggesting the 29-year-old has told his friends he is eyeing a move to N17, Gold believes the Lilywhites are in a good position to secure Johnstone’s signature in the summer:

(42:00) “So we know Gollini probably going to go back to Atalanta. I can’t see Spurs spending the £11m or so on him. And obviously, it looks likely that perhaps Sam Johnstone is going to come in and he’ll replace [him] as as a homegrown player.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

We do find this a really interesting move from Spurs if they are able to get it across the line in the summer just months on from Hugo Lloris signing a new deal.

It looks almost certain Pierluigi Gollini, according to Italian reports (via Sport Witness), will return to Atalanta from his loan spell having failed to impress and only manage to rack up three appearances under Antonio Conte.

Johnstone certainly seems like an upgrade on Gollini given he is a regular in the England set-up and has been playing first-team football on a regular basis.
