First pictures inside Stockport's new rooftop park as incredible town centre transformation continues

The first pictures from inside Stockport's new town centre park have been revealed. The 'pocket park' sits on the roof of the town's new transport bus station

Work on the new £135m transport interchange - a key pillar of the £1bn transformation of the town centre - is now approaching its final stages.

It will have 18 bus stands and will be able to accommodate 168 buses an hour. It will be 'Metrolink ready', should the line ever be extended to the town, and will be accompanied by a tower block with 196 new 'high quality' apartments.

On the roof of the interchange building will be the two-acre, landscaped 'podium park'.

A firm opening date has not yet been fixed, but bosses at Stockport council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), who are behind the joint venture, say it the interchange and park will be open for public use by the spring.

Drone pictures previously showed the progress on the park, which has been nicknamed 'the tissue box' by some due to its oval shape. A public vote on the park's name is underway.

At the turn of the new year, the town hall opened 'polling stations' in the town centre where residents could vote for their favourite of three possible names: Arches Park, Viaduct Park and The Overbank.

The results are yet to be announced. The council has shared pictures from inside the park for the first time. They show a turfed area surrounded by walkways and benches.

In a post accompanying the pictures, bosses said: "The Park @ the Interchange loading....Coming soon: Spring 2024."
