First Division wrap: Wexford book play-off spot

Wexford secured their place in the SSE Airtricity Men's First Division promotion play-offs after a 2-1 away win over Kerry at Mounthawk Park.

Reece Webb set the visitors on their way with a sixth-minute opener but Ryan Kelliher levelled for Kerry eight minutes later.

Wexford's lead was restored by Thomas Oluwa on 68 minutes and the eventual victory cemented fourth place in the table.

James Keddy's side can no longer be caught by any team from outside the top five.

However, Athlone Town, who occupy the final play-off position in fifth will be nervously looking over their shoulders after a 1-0 home defeat to Bray Wanderers, coupled with sixth-placed Treaty United's 2-0 win over Finn Harps at Markets Field.

Conor Knight scored what proved to be the Bray winner in the first half at Lissywollen and that victory keeps the Seasiders four points below Athlone and just about in the play-off picture with two matches to go.

But Treaty are better placed to capitalise on any Athlone slip-up after second-half goals from Mark Ludden and Dean George moved them to within three points of the Midlanders.

On Saturday week, Athlone travel to Finn Harps and Treaty are at home to the champions.

The night's other game saw third-placed Cobh Ramblers continue their strong season with a 2-0 home win over Longford Town with goals in each half from Wilson Waweru and Jack Doherty.

Galway United, who are in Sports Direct FAI Cup semi-final action against Premier Division Bohemians on Saturday, will play their game in hand against second-placed Waterford next Tuesday.
