First Division wrap: Galway make it seven wins on trot

Galway United beat Athlone Town 3-1 to maintain their perfect start to the SSE Airtricity First Division campaign.

John Caulfield's men have now won their first seven games as they threaten to race to the title and pormotion to the top flight.

They didn't have it all their own way, as Athlone took the lead in remarkable circumstance on 33 minutes.

Galway were awarded a penalty after Vincent Borden was taken down in the box, but when David Hurley's spot-kick was saved, the hosts broke and Franz Pierrot finished off a sweeping move.

Five minutes later Hurley redeemed himself when levelling things up with a smart header.

Hurley struck again just before the hour mark with a classy effort and Stephen Walsh wrapped it up 16 minutes from time.

Cobh Ramblers are second, seven points off the pace-setters, after they got past Bray Wanderers 2-1 at St Colman's Park.

Shane Keegan's men broke the deadlock in the who 40th minute when Brendan Frahill headed home from a free-kick.

The side were level after unfortunate Frahill turned the ball into his own net in the 51st minute but 10 minutes later the game turned again. Keeper Alex Moody saw red after after taking down Wilson Waweru in the box. Sunstitute stopper Stephen McGuiness saved Jack Doherty's subsequent penalty, but Waweru won it with a confidnet finish in the 64th minute.

Waterford enjoyed a dream first game under new boss Keith Long as they hammered Finn Harps 7-1.

Roland Idowu got the ball rolling with a terrific 29th-minute opener for Waterford, with Ellis Farrar (44), Killian Cantwell (45), Ronan Coughlan (54), Idowu again (69), Connor Parsons (77) and Giles Phillips (81) all getting on the scoresheet.

Ryan Flood nabbed an 84th-minute consolation on a night to forget for Harps.
