First Division round-up: Top two win again, Longford snatch away victory

The top two in the First Division both picked up away victories, with table toppers Cork City leaving Ferrycarrig Park with a narrow 1-0 win over Wexford, while there was late drama for Galway United in their 3-1 success over bottom side Athlone Town.

City lead the Tribesmen by a point having played a game less. Centre-back Josh Honohan's fifth minute header proving to be the only goal of the game. It was the 21-year-old's first goal for the club.

Over at the Athlone Town Stadium, Andy Spain’s 87th-minute strike looked set to seal an unlikely point for the home side against Galway United.

Robert Manley had put the visitors ahead in the 18th-minute, but even with the late setback, John Caulfield’s men dug deep to find the net twice with 90 minutes up on the clock through Francely Lomboto and Manu Dimas. Athlone Town ended the game with 10 men after the dismissal of Aaron Connolly.

Fourth-placed Longford Town enjoyed a 2-1 victory away to Waterford, the side directly above them in the table.

The home side led 1-0 at the interval courtesy of Shane Griffin, but on the stroke of half-time, lost Wassim Aouachria to a red card.

Jordan Adeyemo drew the visitors level with five minutes remaining, but they snatched all three points when Sam Verdon headed home in the 97th minute.

In the night’s other game, Cobh Ramblers recovered from falling a goal down to Bray Wanderers to record a 3-1 win.

Kurtis Byrne put the visitors ahead with a 28th-minute penalty kick, but Jake Hegarty, Luke Desmond and a cracking free-kick from Darragh O’Sullivan Connell late on to secure just their third win of the season.
