Fire crews to 'work tirelessly' overnight tackling huge derelict mill blaze in Stockport

Fire crews are 'working tirelessly' to tackle a huge derelict mill blaze in Stockport, with roads closed and an 'avoid the area' warning in place overnight.

Emergency services raced to the scene of the fire at the Compstall Mills building, in Romiley, shortly after 6pm, with thick plumes of smoke seen for miles billowing overhead.

Dramatic pictures from the scene showed a heavy emergency services presence in attendance, including eight fire engines and technical response units in an effort to bring the flames under control.

Ben Levy, GMFRS Area Manager, said: “Our firefighters have done incredibly well to contain the fire and reduce the impact on the local community.

“Crews responded quickly and have been working tirelessly in difficult conditions. They will remain at the scene overnight to fully extinguish the fire. I would also like to thank our
