Fire crew remain at scene of huge blaze in Bolton town centre this morning

Firefighters remain at the scene of a huge blaze in Bolton town centre after flames ripped through a commercial premises. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) were called around 6.05pm on Saturday night (June 4) to the 'large' fire on Brown Street.

Several crews worked overnight to tackle the blaze, as large plumes of smoke could be seen bellowing in the direction of the town centre. Residents were asked to keep all windows and doors closed with road closures put in place. Greater Manchester Police, Electricity North West and Cadent Gas were all called to the scene to assist with the operation.

On Sunday morning, one fire engine remained on site to dampen down any remaining hotspots. GMFRS confirmed the blaze is now under control and the smoke has dissipated.

Martin Brocklehurst, Watch Manager at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in charge of the incident overnight said: "Thanks to the speedy response and hard work of our crews, we were able to get on top of this incident quickly, reducing the response from eight fire appliances to two overnight.

"The fire involved a commercial unit on Brown Street, Bolton and was generating a large plume of smoke, which was travelling in the direction of the town centre.

"Crews used specialist equipment including breathing apparatus, thermal imaging camera and respiratory protection equipment to get the fire under control. One fire engine remains this morning to dampen down any remaining hotspots and the smoke has now dissipated.

"We would also like to thank colleagues at Greater Manchester Police, Electricity North West and Cadent Gas for their support throughout this incident."
