Finidi calls on ex-internationals to join in building Nigerian League

Coach of Enyimba Football Club of Aba, Finidi George, has called on overseas-based retired Nigerian players to return home to use their experience in improving the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Speaking after leading the Peoples Elephant to win 2022/2023 NPFL abridged League, Finidi said the return of more ex-internationals to manage local teams will bring glamour to the competition and also boost home-based players’ technical ability on the ball.

The former Ajax of Holland and Calabar Rovers star said the NPFL has potential to become one of the top leagues in Africa if well-organised.

The Super Eagles’ former captain acknowledged that the NPFL has talented players that can transform the league to an enviable height given the right training.

“Nigerian coaches that are not engaged in any assignment abroad need to come home and handle teams in the local league because their contributions will help increase the NPFL’s standard,” he said.

The 1994 African Cup of Nations winner described his 2022/23 NPFL victory with Enyimba as a great achievement made possible by committed and dedicated players.

He said: “With this achievement, Enyimba will work harder to ensure we do not disappoint Nigerians when the CAF Champions League begins.”

Meanwhile, Enyimba Chairman, Felix Anyansi Agwu, has also urged corporate Nigeria to team up with Enyimba FC, as they seek to bring honour to the country.
