Fights break out and goalkeeper pushed at Oldham Athletic v Chesterfield match

A police investigation is underway after fights broke out and a goalkeeper was pushed at a match between Oldham Athletic and Chesterfield FC.

Fans invaded the pitch at the SMH Group Stadium, in Chesterfield, towards the end of the game on Saturday (August 19). Police said fights also broke out 'between a small number of spectators in the ground' while a 'goalkeeper was pushed'.

A 36-year-old man, from Oldham, was arrested. Derbyshire Police said he was questioned 'on suspicion of football offences'.

He has since been bailed. An investigation is now underway, with officers reviewing CCTV footage from the day of the match - which finished 1-1.

Anyone with information is being urged to come forward. PC Adam Collins, Dedicated Football Officer for Chesterfield FC, said: “It is disappointing to see reports of fighting between a small number of spectators and a pitch incursion.

“We are continuing to carry out enquiries and review CCTV to identify those responsible and will pursue any further action if appropriate.”

PC Collins added: “We are continuing to work hard to ensure that supporters of all teams coming to Derbyshire throughout the football season can enjoy the experience of watching their club safely.

“We understand that passions can run high when it comes to supporting your team but there is no excuse to resorting to anti-social behaviour or even violence. Football is a family sport, and we aim to keep it that way.”
